WARNING: I am about to step on my soapbox. I am about to discuss one of my pet peeves.
Not too long ago, I read a rather disturbing tale about a woman who claims to have cured herself from the Hepatitis C virus with colon cleansing and juices. This woman was now making a living selling these colon cleansers and juices. I don't know what disturbs me more. The fact that she believes this to be true or that she has people buying into this load of garbage. She herself does not understand what actually happened to her.
When I spoke to this woman, I found out that she was only tested for Hepatitis C twice in her life. Once upon diagnosis and again some 20 years later. In truth, the colon cleansing and juices had nothing to do with her negative HCV test. What actually occurred is that this woman was one of the 20% of people who only have acute Hepatitis C and her body fought it off on its own. Had she been retested six to eight months after her original diagnosis, she'd have found this out.
When you hear these tales, be careful. It's easy to get caught up in something like this. Colon cleansing and juices will not cure Hepatitis C. This woman has written a book and she is selling the juicing recipes and colon cleansing supplies. THIS IS SNAKE OIL FOLKS. BUYER BEWARE!
Apparently I was going to have a day of "Buyer Beware" moments. Later that same day, someone I know on Facebook who is unable to treat with Peg-Interferon and Ribavirin, posted a link to a Colloidal Silver product she was taking. I had heard the Colloidal Silver routine before. This was not good news. It didn't take long for her to understand why this was a bad idea.
Your liver has the job of filtering things that you put in your body... like your medications. When you have Hep C, you are told not to take iron supplements because the liver has a hard time filtering iron. What would make anyone think that your sick liver could filter Colloidal Silver? Colloidal Silver is not considered safe or effective for any of the health claims that manufacturers make. Silver has no known purpose in the body, nor is it an essential mineral. Colloidal Silver products are made of tiny silver particles suspended in a liquid. The same kind of silver used in jewelry, dental fillings and silverware. Why the heck would you want to put this in your system? Please do not fall for this mess. You will do more harm than good. I promise you that.
As long as I'm touching on quackery here, let's talk about my favorite one. Milk Thistle. I have done a lot of research on this product. Milk Thistle is being sold as a liver supplement and it is being sold to people with Hepatitis C. If you do a survey of people taking alternative forms of treatment, you'll find that Milk Thistle is being used by most of them. It is not intended for use by anyone with liver damage or liver disease. Folks, if you have Hepatitis C, you have liver damage. It's quite that simple. There was actually a research study on Milk Thistle with Hep C patients. It proved there was no benefit to this herb.
Dandelion tea is another one. There is a guy in Hawaii who is the king of Hepatitis C snake oil. He sells this stuff to Hep C patients like it's going out of style. He is another one who claims to have cured himself when in fact he only had an acute case of Hepatitis C. He lives in a mansion in Hawaii. Paid for by people with Hep C. If you're curious about this stuff, do what I did. Do a Google search or a Bing search on these products and see what comes up. But do it this way: Dangers of Colloidal Silver or Dangers of Milk Thistle. Watch what shows up. Currently, there is no treatment for Hepatitis C that has been approved by the FDA that does not come from a major pharmaceutical company. Current medication protocols include Peg-Interferon and Ribavirin, Incivek or Victrelis, and now Sovaldi,
Unfortunately there are people who have not been able to cure with the use of these drugs, people who cannot handle the side effects from these drugs and some that are just afraid of them. This has put us in a precarious and vulnerable spot. There are people out there who are trying to make a buck off of our desperation. Snake Oil Salesmen. They are out there and they are just as dangerous as Hepatitis C is. Please do your research before you get suckered into one of these scams. Some of these things can do way more harm to you than your Hep C is doing. The last thing we want is to get sicker in the guise of getting better, right?
Okay, I am stepping off my soapbox now. For now... until something else gets my dander up!
